LeShae Henderson is a sociologist of race, punishment, identity, and indigeneity. Her current research examines how social institutions, like prisons, construct racial categories, and how incarcerated people respond to and challenge those categories. As a kanaka maoli, her research centers the experiences and voices of Native Hawaiians to consider core sociological questions about racial and identity formation processes, place and carceral mobility, punishment and inequality, and indigeneity.Â
